Crispy on the outside, silky in the middle and coated in a sweet-savoury Malaysian style sauce — this is the dish Saskatoon regulars have been ordering at Szechuan Kitchen since 2007. It is one of the most requested vegetarian plates on our 200-item Broadway Avenue menu.
Malaysian tofu is our house take on a Southeast Asian classic. Firm tofu is cut into thick cubes, fried until the edges turn golden and crisp, then folded through a fragrant sauce built on garlic, onion, sweet peppers and a gentle curry-and-chilli base. The result is a plate that stays crunchy on the outside while the inside stays soft and custardy.
At Szechuan Kitchen we cook it to order in a hot wok, which is why the sauce clings to every cube instead of pooling at the bottom of the container. It travels well, so it is just as good picked up on Broadway Avenue on the way home to Nutana or Varsity View as it is eaten at our table.
Long-time guests describe Malaysian tofu as the reason they first found us, and very little about it has changed in the years since.
Eat in at 835 Broadway Ave, call (306) 664-8668, or order online for pickup and delivery across Broadway, Nutana, Varsity View, Buena Vista, Haultain, City Park, Riversdale and the University of Saskatchewan area.
Sunday to Thursday, 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. Friday and Saturday, 11:00 am to 10:00 pm.

It sits in the mild-to-medium range — warm and fragrant rather than fiery. If you want more heat, ask us to turn it up when you call or leave a note on your online order.

Steamed rice or our special fried rice soaks up the sauce nicely. Many guests add a bowl of wonton soup and an order of spring rolls to turn it into a full family meal.
